Resurgence

Resurgence features two artists whose work aims to reflect on the tradespeople and their role and reflection into a part of the Detroit Resurgence.  Both the interaction of people with others and with machines.

DON SUTTON

Don Sutton seeks to see the organic nature of a made object, structure or space, and how people interact with it. With his arts education and background, he quickly recognized the ubiquity of abstraction within industrial design as to read plans and specifications. He discovered that an untrained eye can look at symbols and lines on a page and not see the building rendered, but the trained eye can look at that same page and see something more. Don wants to help others connect with and better understand the lives tradespeople lead in an increasingly engineered workplace. He makes his art with the things that are common in construction in an attempt to exhibit how tools of industrial design can be re-purposed to express ideas and display skills which are softer than those found in engineering and architectural design.

TIM TONACHELLA

Tim Tonachella is a legally blind artist who has had a life-long love of photography.  His limited sight made him reluctant to do more than family snapshots and personal projects. With the encouragement of friends, who helped him attain the equipment needed to bring life to his art, Tim began focusing on the city landscape and people of Detroit. His images capture the personality of the city and some of its forgotten residents, focusing on the feeling of seclusion that often accompanies urban living.
